New Black Moor in bad shape!

Question
QUESTION: Hello.  I am new to having fish and we have a 30 gallon tank with a total of 10 fish.  2 sucker fish, 2 gold serverums, 3 regular gold fish, 1 black moor, and a dalmation molly.  I added the black moor about 1 week ago and the other fish have been in there for about 2 weeks.  The black moor originally had on eye that was foggy.  The first day I noticed it was missing a scale on it's side.  Then I noticed, a few days after that, more scales missing in other locations.  Today.. I noticed that it's eyes were missing all the scales and were reddish grey!  I think the molly has been attacking it.  I am not sure what to do.  I moved the black moor to a gallon fish bowl (that is the only other thing I had).  Also, I am pretty sure that almost all our fish are getting tail rot.  I researched it and the pictures are identical.  We did a partial water change and added the conditioners.  Our PH is at a good level and our ammonia is at .02.  Please tell me what to do for my poor fish! :-(

Thank you

ANSWER: You need to treat your main tank and the bowl. However, the fish cannot live long in the bowl unless it has a filter, so be careful with that. Chances are the molly is a bully, I do not think they are the best of tank mates. I would remove the molly from the goldfish tank. It sounds like the moor has an eye parasite or disease so you will need to get an all-in-one treatment. Just make sure it says it covers eye conditions and fin rot. But keep in mind goldfish are fragile fish. Many people say they are good beginner fish but they are not. In fact, you may lose some. Dont be alarmed though. The stress of any diseases or parasites combined with the essential stress of the treatment can sometimes be a bad combo with goldfish. Dont let this discourage you though. While the treatment can sometimes be the bad combo it has to be done or the fish will definately not make it. Get the treatment and follow the directions exactly including the dose and water changes. Also, dont skimp on the treatment. Get quality stuff, not tabs or cheap so-called quick cures. The tiny extra money for the quality stuff makes all the difference. Let me know if you need more help or have more questions. I hope everything works out.

QUESTION: I went to PetSmart and talked with a specialist.  He told me to put the black moor in a breeding net in the tank to protect it while it gets better.  Also recommened Fungus Clear by Tank Buddies.  This is a tablet, which I used.  I just now realized that you said not to get a tablet.  Do you think this will work or will it make it worse?  He told me to allow it to stay in the tank for 3 days.  If the fish were not getting better then to do a partial water change and do it again for 3 more days.  He also recommened aquarium salt, which I did not do.  Should I have done this... and if so, am I able to do it at this point?

Again, thank you for your response and all your help!

Answer
While the individual may know alot and may have sincerly meant the best he gave you an average treatment plan. First, I would make sure the net is big enough. If the fish is unable to move, the net will do the opposite. Also, its ok to keep him in the same tank but keep in mind this also gives the other normal fish the extra stress of the treatment. Unless the other fish are showing signs of the problem it would be best to treat the fish with the prob completely seperately, if this is possible of course. If you cannot seperate the fish you have no choice but to stress the other fish. Follow the directions on the box/container. If it says something different from the instruction the individual gave you, follow the containers instructions. I would not add salt, people tend to overuse this treatment and in my experience it has never done much. In fact, in over 10 years, I have never used salt as a treatment! The tabs are ok but I am not sure how good they are. They will not hurt but if the fish does not get better I would get a better treatment. However, feel free to try the stuff you have and see if it works, I just dont advice it. Let me know if you need more help.
