Golden Algae eaters

Question
My 25 gal tank with 3 angels, 1 tetra and 1 gouramie (one died 6 days ago, probably  from stress) has everything covered with brown algae. Fishstore recommended the golden algae eaters. Well, I have now a perfectly clean aquarium, they even cleaned the plastic plants and all decorations thoroughly. the glass is sparkling. Now there is no algae left, what do I feed them. Also they seem to be very aggressive toward each other. Will they harm the other fish? right now they are only about 1-2 inches.

Answer
Hi Peggy,
The golden algae eater is a color variant of the "Chinese Algae eater" There is also a very similar fish called the "Siamese Algae Eater" that is often confused with the chinese.

Many fishkeepers avoid the chinese algae eaters due to their tendency to be a bit "bossy" around other fish and hold a territory. They may also develop a habit of rasping/browsing on the sides of broad bodied fish like goldfish or angels so be careful. They grow up to 6 inches and really are best suited for community tanks with fasting swimming fish like barbs and danios.

But to answer your question, Algae wafers are a very easy way to feed algae-eaters when they have grazed off all the algae in the tank. Simply drop them in at night (the best time to feed most algae eaters)

I do admit, they are cute and pretty little fish. But a better choice with your angelfish in mind is to get a bristlenose pleco. These are lovely little plecos and don't grow past 4-5 inches. Very peaceful and fascinating to look at. Depending upon the size of your angels, Otocinclus catfish would also be a very good choice as well.

I hope this helps!
Karen~
