Question
I need to know if a Aqua Clear 50 Power Filter, would be enough to filter a 40 gal planted tank? I know it is rated to 40 gal, but I heard it is better to over filter. The problem I run into when I over filter ,is that the current is to strong for my tetra. I Also have an issue with fish getting stuck on the intake. Due to the fact it cause such a strong pull.

Answer
Hi Matt

The AquaClear 50 is actually for tanks up to 50 gallons, and should be fine for your 40 gallon. However, AquaClear filters are not the best on the market. They are the lowest priced filters for a reason. I prefer Bio Wheel filters in my aquariums. In a 40 gallon, the Penguin BioWheel 200 or the Emperor 280 would be sufficient. Both of these are made by Marineland.

I also run undergravel filters as a supplement to my power filters in all of my tanks, and in my tanks of 40 gallons or larger, I run undergravel filters and 2 power filters (one on each end) and I also run the next size up from what my aquariums require.

However, running multiple filters in my tanks is a matter of personal choice and not necessary for the Emperor or the Penguin filters. I use these brands in all of my tanks and I have some very small fish, Guppies, Neons, Harlequin Rasboras etc and they never get caught on the intake tube, or shoved across the tank by the return flow.

If your fish are getting caught on your intake tube, raising the tube just a little off of the impeller will decrease the intake flow. Another technique that I use in my fry tanks is placing a stocking or a sponge over the intake strainer. The return flow current can be minimized by keeping the water levels above the base of the return flow tray.

Hope this helps you, good luck!
