Lost 2 fish

Question
I just lost two fish and I have no idea why?  The first was a female dwarf gourami and two weeks later a female platy.  Both became bloated, then listless before they died.  They are in a 32 gallon tank and all my levels in the tank were perfect.  Could it some sort of internal parasite.  Do I have to worry about the same thing happening to my other fish?
Thanks in advance
Kerry

Answer
Dear Kerry,
Sorry to hear about your fish. There could be several possible reasons this could have happened.  Sometimes, it can be difficult to determine what the problem really is.  First, if your water parameters are all in safe range we can exclude this from the list of possible reasons. Also, if you are doing frequent water changes and gravel cleaning, then things should be ok in that area. One thing I wasn't sure about was if you had recently purchased either fish or if you had just recently added any other fish to your aquarium. Sometimes, you can purchase fish without realizing that they are ill until you've had them for a few days and then you run the risk of infecting your other healthy fish.  Sometimes, a fish can become constipated and be bloated and have the same symptoms your fish did.  I don't like to overmedicate fish so I probably wouldn't medicate  the remaining fish yet since they may never get sick.   I would be sure to do frequent water changes and be sure to use a really good water conditioner and just observe to see if you notice any unusual behavior in your other fish that might be signs that they are becoming sick.   Be sure to test your water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.  Sometimes things when you least expect it to happen, will get off balance and cause problems. I know it is upsetting to have two fish die but it doesn't mean that you will have other deaths in your aquarium. Just observe your other fish and be sure to keep your aquarium very clean to avoid any chance of water conditions causing any problems and hopefully nothing else will happen. Best of luck.
Hope this helps!
Karen
