fishy smell

hi,
oflate i have noticed that my aquarium has a fishy smell. why does this happen and what do i do to reduce this? will using biological filteration reduce this smell?

There are several reasons this could be happening.  Do you do regular weekly maintenance of your tank (gravel cleaning, partial water changes, etc.)?  If not, this could be the reason.  If you have rotting plant matter, dead fish, or a build up of mulm from waste and fish food, this tends to stink up your tank.  A good cleaning and a 50% water change may fix your problem, and if you keep up with weekly maintenance, you should be able to keep the smell away.
