Question
Hello,
I have a 10 gal. w/ 1 glofish 2 cory cats and 1 mystery snail.
I asked about Cory eggs earlier, thanks for the advice! It really helped!
Now I have a new problem,my snail I just noticed has a crack in his shell...about last week he "went on vacation" or "hibernated"  or whatever it is they do where they stay still for a while..anyways he has been moving now and I just realized the crack..is this bad for his health?do I need to transfer him to a different tank to heal or is it permanent?will he die?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Adam,
A cracked shell is never good news for a snail. It can harm their delicate systems, or enable the fish to nibble at their delicate soft body. But there are ways you can repair their shell and help protect them from any further damage.

But  some cracks in shells do not necessarily need patching. And they can heal just fine on their own. If the crack is not exposing any major organs it may be just fine. And remember cracks heal from the inside out so don't be worried if you do not see any improvements soon. It takes a while but you do want to be sure that your snail gets plenty of calcium and healthy food and he doesn't get picked on by the fish.

If the break is more towards the front of the shell (the opening) it likely won't be exposing delicate organs.  And again he may be able to heal it just fine on his own if it doesn't seem too severe.

Let me know how he is doing and I hope this helps!!
Good luck!
Susan~
