Rinse or replace filter cartridges?

23 16:30:57

Question
Hi Karen,

I have read on a few websites that it is bad to replace your tank filter cartridges because it gets rid of good bacteria in your filter when you start with a new cartridge. People recommend, instead, to rinse the cartridge with dechlorinated tap water and put it back in. Is this true?

Thanks,
Erin

Answer
Hi Erin,
Everyone has their own methods. But what I've always done with good success is to simply rinse the filter cartridges in a bucket of tank-water when you do your water changes. The cartridges do not need to be changed whenever they become clogged...Its much better to just rinse them in a bucket of aquarium water and only replace them when they've become worn out and ragged-looking.

Most power filters have an extra filter component in the box that harbors a good population of bacteria, such as an extra 'bio-sponge' and those with biowheels especially, bacteria will be thriving in your gravel bed as well so changing the cartridge completely when the fabric gets too worn out or severely clogged beyond being able to be rinsed out usually won't hurt anything.

I really hope this helps!
Best wishes and Happy holidays!
Karen~
