Protein Skimmer

Hi,

Protein skimmers are commonly used in salt water tanks to remove waste materials.  Can protein skimmers be used in fresh water tanks to improve the water quality as well ?  If yes,  are there any special features that I need to take care of ?

Protein skimmers are specially made for saltwater tanks. They're designed to be compatible with saltwater, and to only remove certain things, and leave others in. If it's used in a freshwater tank, then it'll remove/leave some chemicals that could be helpful/dangerous, depending on the chemicals and all that. It might throw off your water levels quite a bit.
