do I need a air pump

Question
I have a 55 gallon tank with cichlids in it. Do i have to run a air pump?

Answer
Hi Marcos,
Fortunately today's filters are quite powerful enough to provide all the aeration a decently-stocked aquarium needs. Airpumps are often added just for the decorative quality of the bubbles rising up. Or they may be added if the the water is very warm (warmer water holds less oxygen so extra aeration is needed) or the aquarium is overcrowded or the fish seem stressed.

But otherwise, no its not required, as long as your filter is creating a good amount of surface agitation and your fish are breathing normally and doing well then don't worry.

Best wishes and I hope this helps!
