lazy clown loaches

Question
I have a pair of clown loaches, I have had them for almost a year now and they have grown to be 3-4 inches long! They have beautiful colouring and my sister-a marine biologist says that they are in excellent condition. The tank that they are in the moment is plenty big enough for them, with pH, nitrate and temperature levels that are set to suit them above the rest of the fish-also I have never had any problems with diseases like Ich. They are living in a well established community tank with tetra and other fish that wont contend with them in any way! Despite building an environment exactly how i have been advised to do so, my fish are very lazy! They are eating ok and rarely use the hiding places available, they interact with each other and seem very close, and now there are no arguments over dominance. I am going to be moving them into a larger tank and am thinking of getting some more clown loaches to go into the new tank with them, is there any reason why the just stay still at the front of the tank all day only playing occasionally? Is there anything i can put into the new tank to stimulate them and encourage them to behave more naturally?

Answer
Hi Portia:  That is pretty much normal behavior for clown loaches.  Since there is nothing really for them to hunt... they just lay low and wait for something to entertain them... You can consider feeding them live food such as tubiflex worms, brine shrimp, etc.  I would add a few more if you have the tank space for it.  Clown Loach love to hunt and even sails provide great entertainment for them....  dave
