Goldfish scale loss

Question
Hello.  I have an outdoor pond with 5 goldfish of 3 years establishment.  This year they bred twice so I guess general health and environment is good.  One of the goldfish developed a small white lump on lower lip with white lack of pigment extending inside the mouth about 4 months ago.  Then he strated to lose scales.  There is no fin damage, no sores, no fungal infestation apparent.  He is lively and eats well but the scale loss is worsening.   Now another goldfish has started with the same thing.  Have treated with a broad spectrum product (Medifin)but no change.  I have heard fish can get the equivalent of cold sores and a viral infection.  What do you think/suggest please?  I am very fond of George & Mildred !

Answer
Hi Marion,
I'm sorry to hear that!!

Unfortunately this is something I've never dealt with before. The scale less may be just from the spawning chases or usual goldfish rough and tumble. The white lump may be a cyst, or difficult to diagnose "pimple" that I've seen fish get. It can be injury that takes a while to heal or it may be something caused by bacteria. So its quite difficult to diagnose. I'd recommend you visit on over to this great goldfish and aquarium/pond forum and ask there, the people are very knowledgeable and will help-

I wish you the best with George and Mildred!
