Is my tank overstocked?

23 15:54:15

Question
I just wanted to know if this is a healthy number of fish in my tank. I have a 15 gallon tank with:

2 gold dust mollies
1 creamsicle molly
3 neon tetras
and 1 rubberlip plecostomus

I personally think that my tank is pretty balanced because the mollies pretty much hang out at the top, the neons stick in a little school in the middle, and the pleco at the bottom. Is my tank large enough to house all of these fish? and by the way, my pleco does not seem to be eating. I have have zuchinni and algae wafers in there but he doesn't eat. The algae wafers are always like rotting at the bottom and the zuchinni hasn't been touched. Please help! - Emily

Answer
Hi Emily,
The main concern with overstocking is the pollution level getting out of hand faster than you can keep up with it even with regular water changes. However, the species you currently keep in general are not very dirty. Perhaps your only concern would be if any female mollies have babies which they do so about every month or so.

But otherwise, I think you have nothing to worry about at the moment. Just keep up with 30-50% water changes at least once a week.

As for your pleco. Remember that most plecostomus species are nocturnal and tend to only want to eat at night when all lights are out. Leftover food can be a dangerous problem when trying to feed plecos but if you put food in at night, usually there is no trace of algae wafers in the morning. This also prevents other fish from being as likely to bully the pleco away from the food and then they end up hogging it all.

I do hope this helps and best of luck!
Karen~
