whats this wierd stuff in my tank?

Question
I have a 10 gallon tank that has mostly guppies, two tiny plecos, a mollie, two ghost catfish, and a couple of snails.  It is a simple beginner's setup that has been running pretty smoothly for almost two years.  I have some kind of white goo floating around in the tank.  I also saw it hanging from the filter.  The goo itself is translucent and looks quite a lot like a booger.  I first noticed it about two months ago and have been cleaning it up as I find it.  Should I be concerned about it?

Answer
Hi Stephanie;

I'm chuckling over your description....booger.....!

Okay, taking off my grin and putting on my serious face now...

It is probably a type of fungus or slime mold. They love tanks with excess waste. It's their favorite food. Make some extra water changes and gravel vacuumings and it will go away. The tank is a bit overcrowded and just needs more cleaning. Do 25% water changes with gravel vacuuming once a week. This should get it in fine shape again.
