new beta habitat

Question
Hi,

I have one female beta and a snail (waste management).  I am looking to
create a new habitat for them.  My idea is take a papyrus plant, put it into a
glass vase with a gallon of water above the soil and a thick enough layer of
rocks to keep the soil out of the water.  I spoke with a plant expert who says
the papyrus will be happy, so I would like your opinion about the beta.

Answer
Hi Justone,

While you may think it's a great idea and looks pleasing aestetically, it's horrible for the fish and is no place for aquaria.

Bettas require at least 5 gallon tanks that are heated and have filtration.  Contrary to popular belief they do not like small, cramped spaces and they are tropical and require a heated temp.  No betta should be subjected to substandard living conditions because we think it looks good.  I know your intention is not to torture this fish, otherwise you wouldn't have asked first.  I'm glad you asked before doing.  This would be the equivilent of you living your whole life in a 2x2 closet.  You could do it but would you want to and is that quality?

If you want the plant, get the plant but leave betta out.  If you want a pretty site get a 10 gallon tank and add 2 more females and plant it densely with live, easy plants live java.

Good luck : ) April M.
