external parasites on betta

Question
Hi, we are new to owning a betta.  It seemed to be doing well, only a couple weeks here at the house.  It is in a 1 gallon or so square vase/bowl.  We have plants and extras in there for it (as the pet store recommended everything inside.)  We add conditioner to the water when we change it.  I was doing changes 2-3 times a week (again per pet store).  Have had difficulty maintaing water temp since it's cold in here. Bought a little heater.  It seems to eat and be happy.  Tongiht I noticed a beige colored strand hanging from the bottom of it.  After looking at pics online I would guess it is an external parasite.  And the fish seems agitated tonight, almost banging in to the glass (never done that before).

Not sure how it got it, nor what I should do.  I feel horrible watching (Licorice) swimming around so wildly.  I ran hot, not soapy water on everything tonight when I changed tank.  thanks!

Answer
Hi Pam,
I doubt if it is an external parasite. That would be highly unusual.  Are you sure that that isn't just one of his feces coming out?  Is it beige, or cloudy white, perhaps with lumps in it?
