Question
Hello,
I have two questions.  Question #1: I have a 40 gallon tank that was just set
up. No fish. Is there a website that will show types of fish, compatability, and
pros and cons of the type of fish so I can make good decisions for my tank?  I
want to research what kind of fish I want to put in it before I just start buying.

Question #2:  I have two 20 gallon tanks with some live plants in them.  The
plants turn brown and don't do well once we get them home.  We recently
learned that we should be feeding the plants weekly.  We bought new plants a
few days ago and they already are turning brown.  We fed them.  We are
leaving the light on 12 hours.  I know it is possible that the fish are eating
them but I am not convinced that it is the fish because it doesn't look like
that.  The leaves are turning brown.  The water quality is maintained and
tweaked as needed.  Any ideas.  The plants involved are misc. $2 to $3 plants
from petsmart.  Some are potted and some aren't.

Answer
Hello Pam.

Answer 1: Stocking is probobly the most difficult thing to do in the aquarium trade. Here is a site that has a general chart:

http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/freshwater_compatibility_chart.php

However, the best way to find out what you can stock, is to ask someone before you take the plunge. Feel free to shoot me another question after you get your tank cycled and ill see if your stocking ideas might have the potential to cause problems.

Answer 2: You want about 60watts worth of high quality lights over each tank. They cannot just survive on regular lights. You also need to do DIY Co2 injection, add fertilizers, and add a plant growing substrate. A good forum for plant information is:
