Question

red devil
hi thanks for taking the time to help me out
i have recently placed 2 red devils in a 125 gallon tank that with a 15 inch pelco they have been in the tank for 3 weeks now and so far they are doing well i do 40% water changes weekly and i test pH levels and ammonia levels before and after each change. have been feeding them pellets one day then flakes the next they like the pellets better but will eat the flakes they were 2 inches when i got them and are 2 1/2 and 3 inches now the larger one has the big hump on his forehead and is way more aggressive he keeps the other one pined up in the corner behind one of the filter intakes and i have to feed him on one side of the tank to distract him while i put food in the other side for the smaller one who i think is female because she has no hump and is less aggressive. really fun fish so far. three days ago i noticed a little black streak on the female dorsal fin then the next day they both had these black blotches on they're sides an fins. it almost looks like mold! they are swimming fine and eating well. I've researched different freshwater illnesses and none match what Im  seeing except velvet and everything says that velvet is a white or brownish dusty looking conditions not black. is this just color change? or is it velvet? or something else? Im starting to worry don't want to loose my fish they are already growing on me and my family please help thanks

Answer
Hi Patrick,
Most likely those are "bruises" that will go away after several days.  That certainly does not sound like velvet (I've never seen velvet on a cichlid).

I think you should consider adding a LOT more structure (wood, rock, plastic plants) to the tank to help break up the space and to provide more hiding places for the smaller (female?) fish.
