betta is constantly flaring

Question
Hi Chris, I've had my betta for a few weeks now. A few days ago, I moved him into a 5 gallon tank.  Last night I noticed he was flaring his gills, something I've never seen him do before.  And today, he has shown a lot of this behavior, flaring not only his gills, but his tail and fins as well.  I know males will do this when they see another male, but that is not the case here. The only thing I can think of is maybe he his seeing his reflection in the tank glass somehow?  Although he's never done this before.  Also, if he is seeing his reflection, is it bad for him to constantly be stressed and flaring like this? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Michelle;

Sounds like he's happy and peppy! Some experts think it's bad for bettas to do that all the time, but I have had many bettas and never found it to be a problem. Some bettas even flare at their owners when they come around the tank or feed them.

He may be seeing a bright color that he thinks is another betta too. But, he will probably get used to the new environment and settle in eventually. If the temperature is warmer in the new tank he could just be feeling healthier and more rambunctious. I wouldn't worry about it!
