Betta sex

Question
Is it true that bettas can change their sex?
Do all males have long tails etc?
Are females ever brightly coloured?

Answer
Hi Nora;

I have never heard of bettas 'changing sex' but they could be mistaken for one or the other. Young males are often thought to be females. If they are "late bloomers" they can eventually grow longer fins and show their true sex.

In "Betta Splendens", the males have longer fins. There are other species of betta that males have short fins.

Females can be very brightly colored. They just have shorter fins and fatter bellies.
