mollie/platy behavior

Question
Hi Chris,

Stats:  30 gal. tank, set-up ~12 weeks, 15% water change weekly, external wet/dry filtration system, pH 7.2-7.4, no measurable ammonia or nitrite.  Temp: 78F.  Heavily planted with live plants. Lights 12 hr. and no problems with algae.

My concern is that two adult females, a mollie and a platy, are displaying unusual behavior: they have been nearly stationary near the surface of the water for the past two days.  They do not display any other signs of stress, such as clamped fins, gulping air, etc.  Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi John;

Sometimes fish try to escape other more aggressive tank mates by going to the top. Have they been chased by any other fish? Are there too many males? There should be two females for every male so the females don't get stressed.

Or, maybe they are ready to have babies?
Do they eat and interact normally otherwise?

They may just like it there and the water current suits them. It's really hard to say.
