Question
Hi! I have a little red-capped oranda named Allen who I love a lot. A few weeks ago he developed dropsy. His eyes were bulging and his scales were beginning to "pinecone". We gave him lots of TLC - including a tank dose of medication to treat the dropsy, as well as anti-bacterial food to munch on. Knock on wood - about a week ago it seemed like we had beat the dropsy. His eyes are back to normal and he doesn't seem to be pineconing anymore. Also, he seemed to be back to his old self (swimming about the tank and having fun). I should mention that when we originally discovered the dropsy, we removed a comet goldfish from the tank (the only other fish in the 55 galon tank) as she was picking on our little Allen and seemed to be stressing him out. Like I said, he seemed to be getting better and actually seemed relieved to have the other goldfish gone. The last 4-5 days however, he has taken to sitting on the bottom of the tank in one particular corner. He kind of seems to be staring at himself but I am not sure. We thought he might be lonely for his old friend, so we put the comet goldfish back in. Allen now seems to have taken on the dominant role, but is still just sitting in the same corner. His dorsal fin is up most of the time which makes me think he is healthy, as in the past, whenever he has felt sick, he puts his dorsal fin down. Should I be trying to do something to hide his reflection - or do you think he is sick? Or maybe he is sitting in that corner for some other reason? Have you ever heard of anything like this before? I love him lots and I want him back to his old self. Please help!!

Answer
It sounds like he is getting over the medicine that's what my fish do after i have treated them with a medication and then they get over it within a few days. Have you been checking you water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity, and the hardness of your water? The tank might have high ammonia or nitrite if you don't test your water i would suggest doing it. You should also make weekly water changes of at least 15% because goldfish produce alot of waste and that means their might be a high ammonia levl in your tank. When you feed your fish you should do it twice a day and scoop out any uneaten food after about 5 minutes of you putting in the tank.

I hope everything goes well if you have any more questions please just ask.
