one old fish is dying--what to do about the other

Question
We have had a pair of goldfish for 13 years. One is finally
dying. My concern now is for the remaining fish--will it
want company or should we just leave it be? I'm concerned
about what might happen if we add a new fish (or more?) to
the tank. We use Cycle and AquaClear, have a small pump.
It's about 11 x 11 x 19 inch tank. Any advice would be
welcome.

Answer
Hi Ellen;

Poor fella. He's lived a good life with you.

I would wait and see how the other fish reacts. If you try to add another one he may not like the intrusion, or he may be weak in his old age and not defend himself against a younger one. See if you can get one close to his size and try it if you want. Before you take one home, ask if you can return the fish if they don't work out.

Hoping for the best.....

Followups welcome
