Fishmom Guilt - give away or keep?

Question
5 years ago I purchased a super-cheap feeder goldfish to keep as a low maintenance pet. I kept him in a 1 gallon bowl for a few years, as I did the buddy I eventually bought for him (in a separate 1-gallon), until I moved them in together into a filtered 5 gallon. The 3-year old guy seems like a "normal" feeder - small and unassuming. The 5 year old guy, though, looks to be in the koi family. He's grown over the years to about 3 inches head-to-tail and about the size of a quarter in girth - and he has the little mustache things. I've read over and over again about the ideal situation and I know two (or even one) fish in a 5-gallon is not good. Unfortunately, as a frequently moving and apartment dwelling individual (5-year old has already moved 5 times), moving up the tank scale is not feasible. I have fishmom guilt and wonder what a more expert opinion might be: I can keep them as-is under the assumption that they know nothing but each other & indoor tank, or I can seek an adoptive home with an outdoor pond for the big guy so he has room to grow. (Or I suppose I could seek an adoptive indoor tank home.) I worry changing his environment so drastically 5 years into his life might be more damaging than his current situation. Opinion please!

Answer
Llana, your bigger goldfish AND the other one may be just a little to crammed in a 5 gallon tank. If they were both a little smaller it would be perfect especially because it is filtered. Although you can get by with the both of them in that tank because of it being filtered, I wouldn't recommend it if you want them to be less stressed and more healthy. If your considering giving them up, think of just giving up the bigger one and keeping the smaller one. Then if you want 2, purchase another smaller one? I would also like to suggest you move up to a 10 gallon tank, which isn't really too big or too hard to maintain and move if needed. If you do this, then you can keep them both and or get new ones! I hope I've helped a little. Let me know what you decide and as always, let me know if you need any other help/advice. Good luck!
