Is my betta dying?

I have a gorgeous beta fish Mercutio that my roommates and I love to death.  I am not sure what happened, but this morning he appeared to have shrunk to about half his size and turned from his normal purple shades to almost completely black.  His fins look spiky and separated.  I put some medicine drops in his new water and he will not eat. He is about a year and a half old. What is happening?

I have never heard of this before. I guess he could be just getting old. Bettas go threw many color changes in there life but i have never heard of a betta shrinking before. Im very sorry i couldnt help very much.
