Sexing mollies

Question
Hi Chris!

My boyfriend bought four mollies to try to feed to his new shark. That plan has since fallen through because the day he got his mollies they had babies when he wasn't looking. There are 40 babies total. Now, we don't want 40 more, so I was wondering how to sex mollies so that we can keep the males and females well away from each other. Please help!

Answer
Hi Chelsea;

Mollies do have a habit of surprising us don't they? ;-)

To sex them, look at the bottom back single fin under the rear of the belly. In males it's pointed. In females it's fanned out. Immature males all look like females so watch as the babies grow up. A baby male can take 4 months or more to show his gender.

Separating them is a good idea but the females can still have babies for several months after being away from males. Those little vixens will store sperm for spontaneous fertilization later.

Good luck...
