Question
I just got a male Betta. I changed his water this evening (after having conditioned it in another vessel for 24 hours prior to the change) and he's acting a little beserk. He's flitting around his bowl and putting his face up to the glass and shaking his tail all around. There is currently a thunderstorm here and I was wondering if Bettas were especially sensitive to this weather or if there could be something else going on.

Thanks!

Answer
Hello Jaime-

Bettas are VERY sensitive to thunderstorms. When they feel the barometric pressure drop (such as before or during a storm) they can go a little crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if your betta blows a huge bubblenest before it's over.

On the other hand, if your betta seems like he is trying to get out of the water and is gasping for air at the surface, I would immediately do an ammonia check to be sure the water is safe and clean and change out 50% of the water.

Hope this helps,
