Green Spotted Puffer

Question
I have tried twice now to get a green spotted puffer to live in my 40 gallon tank.  The first time, I did not add enough salt, but second time added 1 tablespoon per 5 galloons - both time the belly of the fish got totally black and then it died.  Interestingly, once dead the colour went back to white.  I understand that they eat alot, is there any way they were starving?  (He lived about 6 weeks)

Answer
Hi Debby,
The Green Spotted Puffer lives in brackish water.  This means 1 (one)teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon.  When it gets older, it can be found in salt water.  The water must be alkaline...hard water, at least 8PH.  Check you PH as this is very important.  The puffer needs hard, alkaline water, and salt.  If your PH is below 8, buy some seashells...sometimes you can find them at the dollar store.  Put some in your aquarium, and wait 24 hours, check your PH..if your PH is still low, keep adding the shells.  The shells will keep your water alkaline.  It is my belief that they do better in salt water when they get older.
They make wonderful pets, and are funny to watch.  You must provide them with rocky hiding places.
They eat a variety of food.
Hope this helps
