Betta with missing scales

Question
I've had a lone male betta for a year in a three gallon tank with heater.  Today, I noticed he is missing scales on top of his head.  Nothing else is wrong with him--fins are fine, etc.  He is very active and interested in food, perfectly normal except the scales.  What happened to them and what should I do?

Answer
Hi Emily
Have you checked your water to see if it has ammonia.  If so, do water changes until you have no more ammonia in his water...  as to not stress your betta, change 30% every day until you get it down to zero. It is a good sign that he is swimming around, and eating.  Try water changes, and getting it free from ammonia.  Buy Melafix, and an eyedropper, and follow the instructions I am going to give you carefully.  NEVER give the betta the dose on the bottle.  It could kill him.  Here is what you will do...
Put 9 drops of Melafix in his water....add 2 drops every day for three days....then change 50% of the water, and do the same thing over again....maybe he will not need the second dose.
Make sure you always keep his bowl free from ammonia.  This is the number 1 killer of fish, and disease.  Make water changes every week.
Hope this helps
