Question
Hello. I set up a 36 gallon tank 11 days ago. I have experienced a sudden increase in my amonia and nitrie levels. On the advice of the fish store i have done a partial water change the  last three days ( about 10%) of the water each day and cleaned the gravel. Despite the small drop in amonia levels from 1.0 to .50 my nitrite has increased to 2.0 and i have lost 2 fish. What can i do besides continue the water changes? Pleasd help, Thank you LOU

Answer
Hi Lou,
It takes a tank about 6 weeks to "cycle".  Cycling means where the "good" bacteria build up to appropriate levels to handle the incoming ammonia from the fish.  During that time, it is essential that you only have a couple of fish in the tank, and hardy species would be best.  After 6 weeks, you can add more fish.

Given that you already have fish in the tank, the best you can do is to do 20% partial water changes every few days. That will help alot.
