Sick Red Devil fish

Question
Hi Lynda,

My boyfriend has a 4 year old male Red Devil, and a 6 year old female Red Devil.
Two weeks ago, the male started acting listless - nose down in the corner of his half of the tank, and stopped eating the fish flake food he use to practically leap out of the tank for.  He's not even enthusiastic about the frozen fish cubes that are special treats.  He just waits for it to float down to him.

For the last week, he's been developing more and more white spots (fungus?) all over his body, including on his eyes.
and now the female is starting to get them.

My guy is dutiful when it comes to keeping the tank clean and the temperature just right, but he's stumped about what is happening to his "Peaches & Herb".

Do you have an idea about what could be wrong, and how to heal them?

Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

Cordially,  Valyrie

Answer
Hi Valyrie,
Fungus usually attacks weak fish, or fish that are in unkept tanks.  You say your guy keeps his tank clean...it could be that they got weak from always eating flakes.  Fish, all fish should be fed different food...you should have at least 3-4 different kinds of food to offer them if you want to keep them healthy. Check for ammonia, and if the aquarium has ammonia do water changes until it is down to zero.
Fungus is sometimes hard to cure if not caught in time...so run, don't walk to the pet store, and buy Melafix. When you are sure there is no ammonia in the water, follow the instructions on the bottle, and treat your fish. Don't forget to shake the bottle well, and remove your carbon.
Good Luck, and hope this helps
Lynda
