Betta spitting food out

Question
I noticed that my Betta spits his food out (Tetra pellets) after "chewing" them.  I assume he is spitting them out (vs. vomiting)  since they are still whole.   Otherwise, he seems okay.  Is this a symptom of constipation?  I tried the raw pea remedy but he's not interested.   Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Alex;

He's probably just trying to readjust the food after he gets in his mouth. It may be just a little too large to go down easily. Sometimes dry food pellets or even flakes will irritate or injure the inside of the mouth or throat too. It can cause inflammation that restricts the ability to swallow. You can soak his pellets in a tiny bit of tank water before feeding to help him get it down easier and avoid further irritation. As long as he's eating I wouldn't worry. If you think he may be getting contipated, fast him for a couple of days. That means no food at all for at least two days. It's very healthy to do that with fish anyway every week or two. It helps keep their digestion going more smoothly, if ya' know what mean. ;-)
