Question
I have a 55 gallon tank, it contains 2 firemouth cichlids, 2 electric yellow cichlids, and 2 blue cichlids that were classified under various cichlids at the pet store and they can't tell me what sepcies they are. I have one algea eater and a silver catfish. All my cichlids are middle feeders. I was wondering If I could find a surface eating fish that would be compatible with the fish I already have. I am sorry I tried to do good research but the pet stores in my area are not very good for seeking information and I just get lost on the internet. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Ann,
You might try giant danios -- they live near the surface and are fast enough to avoid the attacks of the cichlids.  Keep in mind that they also jump (really well) so your tank absolutely must have a complete cover.  If there is a hole, they will find it and jump through it, only to end up as a dried "potato chip" on the floor.
