Question

Swollen Lips
I have a beautiful Flowerhorn which has been in my tank a little over 2 years. He is about 12 inches and has always been very healthy.  Yesterday I noticed his lips were extremely swollen and appeared bloody and peeling.  He has always been an agressive eater however, he isn't eating at all right now, I can't blame him, it looks painful.  I tested the water using the Quick Diip 6-in-1 test kit and all levels were in the safe/normal zone.  I have two other fish in the tank, both much smaller, green terror and blackbelt, and they seem to be healthy, not showing any signs of being sick.  I did a 25% water change, added aquarium salt, and started treatment with Maracyn.  I haven't been able to find any information on what type of illness this is and I don't want him to die.  I wanted to at least try something but would feel better knowing this is the correct treatment.  I've attached some photos of him. The picture was taken yesterday and his condition as of this morning seems to have worsened.  Any advice you can provide me is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Shannon,
To be honest, in all my years of fish keeping, I have never seen that.  Sadly that also means I don't have anything that I can particularly recommend to do about it. Doing the water change is always good, but I don't know what salt or Maracyn will do.  I can tell you that I wouldn't worry about him not eating -- a fish that size can easily go a couple of weeks without eating.  I guess the best you can do is hope that it was some sort of irritant that will go away, though I realize that isn't of much comfort. Sorry.
