QuestionHello, I know this might be an odd question, but have you
ever tried switching the fry between two different parents
of the same cichlid species? If you have, do you know what
species will more readily adopt fry? I have already seen a
few journal articles of people collecting wild Cichlids and
their brood and finding that some fry foreign.
AnswerHi Eric,
There have been experiments to that effect. The answer is that "it depends". In general, parents might adopt fry that are smaller than their own. In very rare cases a parent without fry might adopt fry but the typical response to being presented with foreign fry is to eat them.
