Question
Hi, it's me again. I wasn't allowed to ask anymore follow up questions, so I started a new one haha. I decided he has hemorrhagic septicemia. A website talks about all the symptoms, even the swollen anus (vent?).This was probably due to my lack of education on the subject of how and how often to clean out a fish tank. I gave him a full tank cleaning every two to three weeks. I now know this is a very big no no and feel guilty and embarrassed to admit this. I also discovered the medicine I have been giving him was not antibiotics and i thought they were. :'( When I found this out I made an emergency trip to pet smart and got him on triple sulfate antibiotics ASAP! So far the redness has completely disappeared from his nose and fins.( he still has a little red 'bruising' in some place, but they are clearing up.) He still has a bumpy tummy and he is still on his side, but every so often he tries to right himself. He is acting better even tough his situation is still very serious. I am very concerned about the white strands. I am very worried he has internal organ problems, but I have not seen him poop anymore white strands. (I only saw him do this twice, so hopefully I caught it in time.) If it is internal problems would it be organ failure? Or is it the bacteria taking over and squirting out? Or is it something else? If it is organ problems can they heal? Are there other signs I should be looking for to determine damage? Nothing on the internet talks about the white stuff. (I also wanted to tell you I cleaned out his tank when you said. I have not put anything other than antibiotics and aqua safe in it. To my surprise, the aqua safe doubles as a dechlorinater. I know you said not to put medicine in his tank, but since I changed it I have seen a drastic increase in him. I also asked the store if it was okay to go from the non antibiotics to the antibiotics and they assured me it was okay. I am also having problems getting the temp up. I bought a heater, but it has been on since yesterday and the temp is still the same... I think I'm going to take it back... The temp is 68/70ish right now. )

Answer
Hi Jessica,
A functioning heater should raise the tank temperature in a few hours at most.

I can't tell if there is organ damage, and particularly not from here, unfortunately.

Your best weapon for keeping a fish healthy is to do regular weekly partial water changes of 25%.
