QuestionMy oldest female cherry barb is still only an inch long and I recently noticed her nasal passages are raised and look swollen. I dont know if this is a species trait or some sort of disease. My others are so young and I haven't seen this trait. Her behavior is fine, but I truly have a harmonious tank and don't want to miss an early warning sign. At some angles under water it would appear it has a white tinge but not sure if that's tissue around the nasal cavity or not. I am sure I am being extra cautious but havn't found anything online resembling this. Can you help?
AnswerHi Crissy,
I have never kept cherry barbs but I would be cautious about treating this. It is possibly just a sign of maturation -- for many fishes, their nostrils get more pronounced as they get older. Your best bet is to make sure that the living conditions are as good as possible, i.e., be sure to do a water change of 25% once a week, every week.
