Sick Goldfish Getting Worse

Question
I have a 3 gallon tank with 4 goldfish in it (2 black moors, 1 fancy tail, and 1 red cap oranda). There is also 2 snails that I bought when i had a bad algae problem completely covering the tank.
About a month ago one fish was spotted with a white spot just above the gill on his right side. At first i thought this was ick and did research on curing it. One cure said to maintain a normal pH balance and since i was currently have issues with that i thought that might be it and invested in some pH stuff at the pet store. The spot got a little better then worse.
It grew a little white stem off it and I noticed another fish had it too. About a week ago (when second fish was spotted) I bought an ick and white spot treatment and have been following the instructions on the bottle and regularly treating it.
But it seems to make it worse.
All the fish now have at least one of these odd spots with stems. Two fish have two or more spots.
There is nothing online that i could find about this illness.

Do you have any idea what this is and how to cure it?

Answer
Dayna,   The goldfish bowl is such a a big misconception. Goldfish need BIG water!!!! They are going to get big no matter what size your tank is and is the dirtiest little buggers. Water quality is of the upmost importance with these guys. I would not have put one of them in that size tank and am surprised the shop that sold them to you let you. I have a blackmor ..... he is 9 yrs old. He is huge and lives with an algae eater and that's all in a 45 gallon tank. These fish can live up to 30 yrs under the right conditions. I am not sure if you have fluke worms and ick or just ick. The Drs. are still out on what causes ick and exactly what it is. We know for sure temperature changes cause it but, alot of biologist think stress can too. Fluke worms you probably bought them with. I would cure both with coppersafe and follow the instructions but, hun you need at least while they are baby's a 29 gallon tank. Your filtration should be one step up from what you would get for your size tank to keep these guys healthy. Do some fancy goldfish research and you will learn quick. They have such great personalities too. I hope everything goes ok let me know. Good Luck, Tina
