Betta behavior

Question
We have had our betta for a year or so. We just recently got a plastic plant for his home as we thought he might be happier that way. Ever since we put the plant in, he will not take his nose out of the corner. He also is not eating the way he was as a result. Do we need to take the plant out? Any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Kate:

Some fish do indeed appear to get upset when their environment gets changed but it is also very possible that this was just a coincidence.  It couldn't hurt to remove the plant but it is possible that the cause could be something else - it is very possible that your fish is getting old as Bettas often times only live a year or two.  It also wouldn't be a bad idea to check the water quality and temperature as Bettas are more active in warmer (~78 degree) water.
