Sick, or just changing color?

23 11:02:00

Question
So I've had my Betta boy, Fennel, since about... last December or January, I think, and recently, I've noticed that his scales appeared to be changing in some manner. At first I thought he had somehow lost great swaths of scales, but when I took a closer look, I could see what appeared to be the edges and pattern of scales that were still there.

Now, I got him when he was still young, and he's always had a lavender-purple body, a red head, and red fins tipped with that same lavender-purple as his body. However, he now appears to be... tie-dyed, with this white-ish red color that mimics his fin-color.
Should I be worried, or is this a natural occurrence?

Answer
Brittaney,
It is common for a Betta to change his coloring. Is he is a large enough tank with a heater set at 82 degrees? Are his scales sticking out making him look like a pine cone? As long as he is still eating and swimming normally, he should be ok. I have found that the Betta's with blue or red coloring tend to change color more often. Since he has purple in his coloring, which has red in it, he could just be changing. Make sure you are testing his water weekly and also doing weekly water changes. If he starts showing signs of illness, such as not eating, not swimming, and looking lethargic, let me know.
