Question
Hi, I have a couple questions about my 3 common goldfish. They are all in a small pond in my backyard. About a month or two ago I left to go on vacation for a few days, and when I got back I started to see tiny little fish. Ive had them for a little while now and they all are around an inch long. I have no idea which of my three fish are the parents. I have a large 5 inch fish and 2 smaller ones both like 3 to 4 inches. Ive noticed one of the smaller of the three fish start to chase around the baby fish, it looked like it was trying to catch one. What is the best way to determine which of the three fish are the parents, and which are male and female?

Answer
Brad,
Since you didn't see the "birth" of the fry, it will be impossible to know who the parents are. As for sexing them, if you look at the gills , that large roundish flat area that is on top of the actual gill you will see  white dots. If the dots are there, then you have a male. Sexing goldfish is very difficult and if you are not sure, take a picture of the fish from the side and take it to a pet store and see if they can help you.
