Pigeon diseases - sharing space with macaw

Question
Hi:

I volunteer at an emergency animal rescue.  We deal with mainly dogs and cats, but will try to do whatever we can to help any species that comes through our doors.  Approximately three months ago, a white pigeon was brought into our clinic by a good samaritan who found him/her with a broken wing.  Our vet pinned the wing and amazingly it healed so well that the pigeon is now able to fly again.  We feel the pigeon was somebody's pet since he/she is so friendly, but unfortunately, there is no identification on him/her.  So, I volunteered to take the pigeon home and give him/her a good life.

My question for you is - do I need to be concerned about any diseases that may be carried by the pigeon and passed on to my macaw if I decide to keep them together?  The pigeon has not exihibited any signs of disease during his 3 month recovery period at our clinic and appears to be happy and healthy.

I have had my blue and gold macaw since he was a baby (about 13 years).  He has always been an only bird and has a large sunroom all to himself (approx. 240 sq. ft), so there is plenty of room to share.

Or would it be better to house the pigeon somewhere else, away from my macaw?

Thanks so much for your time and assistance.

Answer
Hi Shari,

I this situation, I would house them separately as they are two very different species of birds and also behave differently. There could be certain things passed between the two, such as intestinal ailments. They also have  very different diets as well. I think it would be wise to keep them separate.

Thanks,
Stacie
