keeping budgie warm?

Question
Hi.
I have a parakeet who is about 6 years old now. The last few winters, he has been very quiet most of the day and often sits all balled up like he's cold. Should I get some kind of lamp/heat lamp for him? Could it harm him?
Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hello George! A heat lamp is certainly a great idea! A heat lamp cannot really get too hot for the keets because their bodies are meant for extreme heat. A heat lamp will provide your bird with warmth and help circulate the blood. I recommend an infrared heat bulb. This light provides heat (and it doesn't get too hot to the touch, it stays at one temp.) helps boost the immune system and is in general more healthy than the average day heat bulb. These lights can be found in the reptile section of your pet store. Place the bulb about 14 inches away from the cage. Make sure there is a spot where the light does not hit that way if your birds decides its too hot he can move to a more shaded area. You can turn it off at night or leave it on. I have an infrared heat lamp on my finches to keep them warm, and it works great. This lamp is so relaxing, you might even want to use it if you have any sore muscles! Your bird will be happier and more cheerful. good luck!
