Question

Budgies, Lingie 30.8.2
Hi Leah,
One budgie of 10 has discolored feathers near left ear & is not clearing up. Seems worse today, 10 - 14 days approx.
It's brown colored & seems like some discharge from her ear.
She seems OK, still eating flying etc etc.
What could it be, have you come across before & if so what can I do for her?
Sat 30 Aug, afternoon here & Vet's closed.
Please Help !! Graham - AUSTRALIA

Answer
Ear discharge is really rare in budgies, and is almost always caused by an infection.  Once the vet is open, get her in and an antibiotic will normally clear it up like it never even happened.  If she seems okay for the most part, she'll probably be fine until you get her in to the vet.  If she continues to get worse, is there an emergency vet clinic you can take her to?  Check around; a lot of cities have 24/7 animal hospitals.

Meanwhile, try to make her comfy.  Isolation isn't necessary unless you're worried the others might pick on her.  Keep the area around her cage dark and quiet so she can get plenty of rest.  If you have a humidifier, use it.  If not, just run a hot shower and once the bathroom gets steamy put the cage in there for a little while.  If she's eating okay, great.  But if she isn't eating as much as she should, try giving her treats to get some nutrition in her.  Leafy greens are good for birds in general, but if they're sick, they have antioxidants which can help them get better quicker.  Kale, parsley, that sort of thing, but make sure there are no pesticides or anything on them (even a little bit can kill a budgie), organic is best!

Keep an eye on her and keep me posted!
