Beak problems

Question
Hi, i own 2 budgies and one of them has problems with the beak. A bit of an intro, i got my budgies in a store over a year ago, and they are still scared of me, they will not fly out of the cage even if i leave it open, they try to hide when ever i come close, jump if i even move in the room> they are terrified of fruits and vegtebles for some reason and wont eat anything but the standard bird food. My budgies always scream at each other and before always tried to fight each other and push the other one off, but now that seemed to stop.

recently i noticed that one of the budgies started sitting side ways and hides his left side when ever i try to look, finally when he tried to get up higher in the cage i saw that part of his lower beak sort of broke off and is going the other way
can you help me fix that?

Answer
Hello Alex! The beak mutilation is a result of fighting. The other bird probably cracked it open trying to defend itself. Seperate the two birds even if they may not be fighting now. The beak is like a finger nail and grows constently. With out the proper diet, lack of chewing on toys, and not preening will cause the beak to grow to an unsafe legnth. By this point the budgie cannot eat because its beak it too long. Make some observations when your budgie is seperated, is it eating a normal amount? Is it drinking water? have you noticed the bird being in any pain when grooming or playing? Does you bird chew on toys?
Theres nothing you can do to make the beak return to normal but just watching it. If the bird is taking care of itself properly, the beak will heal, cracked or not and will not bother the bird. You just have to watch out for the obvious, not eating and the beak getting longer. If the beak get too long, a pet store may be able to trim the birds beak for free or a small fee of $5. For now, keep an eye on your birds beak. You dont want to risk the other bird injuring his beak even more than it already is. good luck! and let me know if anything changes
