Question
I inherited my mother's budgie when she died a few weeks ago.  At first the bird was very vocal and flew around - lately he has become still(sits by his mirror all the time)he is quiet and sometimes makes little wheezy noises barely audible.(my daughter says he is missing grandma).  Is that possible?  What can I do to make him happy again?
Many thanks
Adassa

Answer
  Hello Adassa,

Regarding your parakeet, I would lean more towards some form of illness or condition that is causing your parakeet to act this way. It could be quite possible that the stresses of moving, having new surroundings and new humans could lead to your bird being more prone to illness. If your parakeet was acting normal for the first several days and all of the sudden became "different" this could be a sign of trouble. Parakeet's like many birds often hide their illness, because in the wild the weak or ill are picked out as prey to other animals. When a bird shows some signs of being sick it is past time for a vet visit. Best of luck to you and your parakeet and my condolences to your family regarding the loss of your mother.
