Question
hey Leah, ok i have 6 budgie. I dont know if there girls or boys cause the ceres turn into different colors. On some other websites people say that your budgies might not be breeding because they don't know how to. is this true and if so will they ever learn how to?

Answer
Okay, if the cere is blue (or pink if you have pied budgies), they're males.  If the cere is brown or a purplish like a bruise, then they're females.

"Not knowing how" is pretty much never the cause of infertility unless the bird is extremely young.  You shouldn't breed them if they are under a year old because young females tend to have more problems like eggbinding which can be fatal.  Breeding is instinct; all animals know how, or figure it out pretty quick.  Do you have nest boxes in the cage?  A good rule of thumb is two boxes per pair so that they can choose which one they want, plus they won't fight over the best nests.  Try putting wood shavings or dryer lint in and around the nest.  Budgies are little neat freaks and will clean it out.  This behavior can help trigger breeding instincts in birds.

I hope this helps.  If you have more questions, feel free to ask.  Keep me posted!
