New budgie

Question
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read this mail :)

I recently bought a young male budgie (i assume he is young, as his eyes are black in colour, and his head is covered in stripes? having done research on budgies, they say that is one way to identify their age). This is my first time that i have a budgie as a pet, so i am quite new to working with budgies. I have had him for a day now, and he is adjusting nicely to his cage, and is quite active. I have spent most of my time with him since buying him, because i would really like to bond with him, in the hope of being able to tame him. While spending time with him, i noticed that he has these sudden bursts of energy. It is almost as if he goes into a frenzy, he bites the bars of the cage (quite hard), and climbs onto the highest perch in his cage, swings upside down and then drops to the floor and does this repeatedly for a while. He does not seem to get injured while doing this, but being a first time budgie owner, i am a little worried. Is this behaviour normal? I understand that it may be pent up energy, but i dont want to let him out of his cage until he is trained, just incase he panics and hurts himself.
He does have some toys in his cage, but i am thinking of buying him a small ball that he could push along the floor of his cage? Would that help?
Do you have any advice? Because i would really like to take the best care of him possible.

Thank you,
Regards, Lauren

Answer
 Hi Lauren,

It certainly sounds like you have a perfectly healthy budgie. Your research is correct, the stripes on the head and solid black eyes means that he is in fact a young budgie. Budgies are quite active and acrobatic. He will do all kinds of tricks and flips to entertain himself. I would keep your bird in the cage until his wings are clipped, a bird with full flight could easily kill himself accidently. Best of luck, enjoy your bird!
