Parakeet laid egg

Question
I just found an egg in my parakeets water dish! We have two parakeets, I think they are both female, not sure though. We got them in December and they were just a few months old. I checked their ceres the one is definitely pink, the other one is hard to determine! My question is should I put a nesting box in the cage. I read that if you take the egg away they will just continue to lay to replace the lost egg. I also read that laying too many eggs is harmful to the bird. I don't want to do anything that will harm her but I really don't want baby birds! And why the water dish of all places!!! Thanks for your help!

Answer
Lorrie,

It is quit common for parakeets to lay eggs without a mate present. It is true that laying to many eggs could harm a female parakeet, but in most cases you will not have a egg laying machine, most birds just lay an egg here and there, which is reasonable. I wouldn't worry about the nesting box unless she continues to lay egg day after day.

Best of luck!
