Keep Violent Budgie Alone?

Question
Hi Amber.
I used to have two budgies, but the second one flew away about a month ago. I was thinking that it might be best if I left the remaining one, Smoky, alone instead of getting her another companion. the problem is that Smoky would constantly beat up and bully my other budgie. it would get to the point where she would be bleeding. (i had two females). Smoky has made her bleed from the nose, above her nose, and from her wings. they have a medium-sized cage, but they are never in it. i have a giant parrot toy hanging off a hook in the wall for them to fly to. i let them out in the morning and they put themselves to bed at night, so they have ample room and freedom. this bird is just very violent (she even bites me very hard). is it ok if i keep her alone? she seems like she's in a much better mood and gets along with me a little bit more than she did before. i don't really want to take the risk of getting another bird if she's just going to hurt it also. what do you recommend?

Answer
hello Sandra! I think you should still get another bird for smoky. Females can be very agressive twords eachother and like you saw, can end up beaten up pretty well. This time try getting a male (blue cere). A male will stand up to a pesky female, and dont worry they wont lay eggs unless there's a nesting box. Keets are flock animals and are happier when there's another budgie around. If it continues (the female fighting) seperate them. All birds have different personalities and yours just may like its solitude. But try out a male and see how it goes. CAuse she may not show it, but she will be happeir with another one. Also fighting is usally caused by breeding hormones and this can happen when they are not getting enough sleep. Turn off the lights early and shoo them into their cage. The more night time, the less aggressive they can be. Too much daylight stimulates the breeding hormones. Good luck with Smoky!
