Question
Hi, I have a male and female cackatle, and they used to breed and lay eggs a couple years ago but they didn't have a box. I gave them a box a couple of weeks ago. The female has been sleeping in the box, but has not laid. I just discovered that she is getting pretty skinny and it looks like she might have a lump down there. I felt it and I didn't feel anything hard. I think that she may be egg-bound, but she is pooping, and she has always had cuddle bones and has been eating them like crazy since I gave her the box. She was fine before I geve her the nest box.
Is she in fact egg bound?
What should I do?
I would like to avoid taking her to the vet as it is stressful and expensive.
Sorry so lengthy, I just want to be clear and give all information.
I am not that experienced, so any helpful advice you can provide is much appriciated.
Thank you.

Answer
She may be egg bound to see if she is turn her over and see if theres a lump near her vent if so put some cod liver oil around the vent and allow some to go into the vent, you can then hold her vent over a bowl of hot water the steam will help release the egg. If you are scared that shes going to die take her to a vet asap as this may save her life, it is no more stressful to take her to a vet to have soimething done then to do it at home with a bird thats not used to being handled, also if your not "that" experienced you shouldnt be breeding cockatiels.
